A poem in Ruth Padel’s poetry book ‘Girl’ is written about this photograph It is titled “The Woman who Photographs Ballerinas Underwater” for Caroline Gray..

“No oxygen equipment

just a waterproof camera

she breathes in   the girl breathes in

they both dive to the bottom of the pool

and the dancer curls in on herself like a curtseying swan

petals of floating tulle   pale satin-ribbon shoes 

I want to keep faith with them both 

We are all witness to the flame 

of this moment  a girl in the wisdom of her body

and her art    a woman 

In the wisdom of her noticing   her empathy

and observation   her years of living and her art 

as the shutter   or whatever mechanism it is

comes down

in the flake of time

it takes to release one human breath”

How often can we capture a moment like this?  A moment suspended.. dreamlike free falling into the dark, a dark not threatening but enveloping like sleep, the dancer's body, relaxed and happy, yet reminiscent of transience.

As the eye reads down, the fractured shapes and ripples in the reflections gradually resolve into the beauty of the dancing figure below and her gestures of expansive acceptance. 

Sleeping Beauty - in century-long slumber, surrounded by deep silence, she floats in perfect rest.  Only the occasional ray of light reminds us she is waiting for a kiss.
