Bio: Caroline Gray was born in Kuala Lumpur, and grew up in Canterbury, UK, where took her first photographs. Visiting her father in a tea plantation in Darjeeling further inspired a life-long love of travel, of the color and variety of landscape.

Previously she worked in PR, choreography, theater, and art galleries, but photography has always been her passion. Her passion became her profession. This blossomed when she moved to California 25 years ago, and began photographing its landscapes and coastline. Alongside this she developed a twin career as artist, finding the two media enriched and emboldened eachother. An enthusiastic swimmer herself, water has ever been a primal fascination. The varying moods of the ocean, scenes of life on the beach, and, as in the current exhibition, movement and dance underwater. These are accompanied by some of her Death Valley series. The human body, so at home in the water, here struggles to gain purchase in the sheer majesty of the landscape.

In her own words:

“The camera is for me another organ—a mode of sensibility in its own right, like visual touching. I can’t imagine exploring the world without it, seeing it always renewed. The dialog it invites, whether with natural landscape or the human body, creates a vocabulary more nuanced, more sensitive, than I can find in words.”
